How Do You Know When Your Pool Needs Pool Replastering?

One of the major benefits of using plaster for your swimming pool is the ease and affordability of replacing it. How do you know when your pool needs pool replastering, though? It is obvious when there are large cracks or discolored sections of plaster. Other times it can be more subtle, like finding flakes of plaster in your skimmer. Some of the signs that you need to replaster your swimming pool include:

Chemical imbalances in your water can damage the bonding underneath your plaster. Damage to the bonding can result in pieces of your plaster peeling and flaking.

Many things, from algae to chemicals, can leave stains on your plaster over time. While acid washing can treat some of these stains, it is often better to completely replaster your swimming pool.

Your plaster should be smooth to the touch. It is a sign that the plaster is compromised when it becomes rough or coarse.

Changes in temperatures and chemical imbalances can result in cracks in your plaster. If you do not plaster over cracks, it can allow water to seep into the foundation of your swimming pool, causing further damage.

Our Pool Plastering Process

So, what do pool plastering services include? At Aquaman Pools, we use a proven pool plastering process that ensures high-quality results every time. A complete pool plastering job involves everything from undercutting your current layer of plaster to refilling your swimming pool after the new layer of plaster has been applied. Below is every step in our pool plastering process.

Step 1: Pick Your Plaster

First, we will help you select the color and finish for your pool plastering project. Replastering your swimming pool gives you a chance to totally revamp its appearance. There are countless different colors and many different finishes, including quartz, pebble, and glass. We can show you samples and help you understand which type of plaster will suit your swimming pool best.

Step 2: Draining Your Swimming Pool

Once we are ready to start working, we need to drain your swimming pool. Aquaman Pools has a team of expert pool repair and maintenance technicians who know how to safely drain your entire swimming pool using submersible pumps. We are careful not to let the draining process damage your yard or any of the surrounding areas.

Step 3: Release Hydrostatic Pressure

Once the water is removed from your swimming pool, there is a change in the balance of pressure levels between your pool and the ground surrounding it. If that pressure is not balanced, it can cause your pool to pop up out of the ground while it is empty. Our team will relieve any hydrostatic pressure and ensure that your pool stays safely in its foundation before we begin.

Step 4: Undercutting and Prepping

Undercutting allows us to remove some of your existing plaster to ensure we have the best base for the new layer of plaster. We will undercut specifically around the waterline tiles and pool fittings like jets, lights, and drains. Then, we prepare the surface for plastering.

Step 5: Inspecting the Empty Swimming Pool

Next, we inspect your swimming pool for defects that could affect the application of plaster. The two main things we look for are hollows and cracks. Cracks may need some prior treatment or sealing agent if severe enough. Hollows can look like bubbles or nodules around your plaster. They occur naturally in most swimming pools. We will knock out all major hollows to ensure your new layer of plaster is as pristine as possible.

Step 6: Muriatic Acid Wash

A muriatic acid wash cleans the surface of your swimming pool. It removes tough stains and calcium deposits while roughening up the surface. The wash ensures that nothing is left on the surface that could compromise the bonding of the new plaster.

Step 7: Applying the Bonding Agent

To encourage the most secure bonding of your plaster with the substrate, we apply a cement and sand mixture composed of equal parts resin and bonding cement. The bonding agent is either rolled or sprayed onto the walls and floor of the swimming pool. This step in the process is vital for ensuring the longest-lasting plaster possible.

Step 8: Putting Down the Plaster

Now comes the main event: the plaster. We either spray the plaster or apply it by hand, depending on the circumstances. The layer of plaster will usually be between 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch in thickness. We make multiple passes, smoothing the surface by hand with a trowel and other specially designed tools. Once the plaster is in place, we can apply any necessary finishing.

Step 9: Washing the Surface

Before your plaster finally sets, we carefully handwash all walls and floors. This an additional level of smoothness by eliminating any final rough spots, lines, or unevenness. It also offers us a last chance to check the final quality of our work.

Step 10: Final Inspection

Once everything has dried and set, we give the entire pool one final inspection. We take the quality of our work very seriously. So, we always double and triple check every square inch of your swimming pool to ensure that the plaster has set right.

Step 11: Refilling Your Pool and Balancing the Chemicals

Before we leave, we will refill your swimming pool and balance the chemicals. Our expert pool maintenance team knows how to get your pool ready to go as quickly as possible. We won’t leave until we are sure that everything is working properly.

What Are the Types of Pool Plastering Finishes?

You might be wondering what the types of pool plastering finishes are. There are many different colors and styles. There will surely be one that will give your swimming pool the brand-new look you’ve always wanted. The most common plaster finishes include:

  • Basic: Basic plaster finishes come in various colors, but the basic finish does not offer the same long lifespan or enhanced appearance as the other finish options.
  • Quartz: Quartz is one of the most durable minerals in the world, lasting 10 to 15 years and offering slip-resistant properties.
  • Pebble: Pebble finishes give your swimming pool surface the natural look of stones and a smooth, non-abrasive texture.
  • Glass: A glass finish will really make your whole swimming pool shine with its reflective brilliance and clean aesthetic appeal.

How Long Does Pool Plastering Take?

The timeline for each project can vary, but on average, it takes between four and seven days to completely replaster a swimming pool. When thinking about how long it takes to plaster your swimming pool, you should consider the size, the extent of the existing damage, and any factors that would make access to your pool difficult.
